STRAND (Beach)

Along Åland's shores, stones are shaped by sea, wind and time, each with its own unique beauty. For the STRAND collection we carefully select Åland beach stones and create jewellery to wear close. Every piece is unique and personal. STRAND is more than a piece of jewellery — it is a part of Åland, to carry with you.

From the earth to the wearer

They carry their millions of years well — all the jewels of the shore. Each little stone is a memory of the earth's origin and dramatic history, worn down by ice, wind and water. Nature holds an endless spectrum of colours that all suit one another, and our own human palette too.

We invited stone-cutter Johnny Juthman from Övermark to work with head goldsmith Maria Karlström's collection of Åland beach stones, creating beads in the shore's own gentle range of colours. In our hands they are framed in oxidized 925 sterling silver.

Nature is bigger than our webshop

After the first summers with Strand, we have learned that all of nature's stones are equally beautiful. We truly want to offer the collection in our webshop — but only if you are prepared to receive any colours and colour combinations the stones may have.

If you would rather choose your own Strand piece, you are warmly welcome to our shop in Sjökvarteret on Åland.

You can also email or call us if you have a special wish!

Åland beach stones

I spent the summers at my grandfather's cottage, still in the family to this day. There I wandered along the shoreline and let the stones catch my eye. I gathered and gathered. The stones never had any real purpose — perhaps they lay on a windowsill until someone cleared them away. And I gathered new ones.

The stones for the STRAND collection I have gathered together with my mother and my daughter. Three generations of women on my grandfather's shore, pockets full of treasures. They were then cut and shaped by Johnny Juthman from Övermark, just north of Närpes. He feels the same about the stones as I do — that there is something magical about this ancient material.

The stones on Lumparn's shore

Granite

Coarse-grained, crackled red granite ripples as gently as the sea waves in Åland's outer skerries and gives our roads their pink tone. The rock is also called rapakivi, and it is the very foundation of Åland. Radioactive elements in the minerals act like tiny clocks, and so we know it is more than 1,585 million years old. Granite can also be white or black.

Porphyry

The beach stones that range across the spectrum between grey and black are often porphyry. The hard groundmass is made of rapidly solidified lava or ash that rained down to earth. Over the millions of years, quartz, feldspar and hornblende have found their way into the dense structure as hexagonal crystals.

Sandstone

The pale, single-coloured stones on the beach — light grey, yellow and sometimes pink — are sandstone. Water, ice and wind erode various rocks into sand, which is then pressed and bound together by natural cement. In sandstone, plant matter, shell fragments and remains of various animals can become embedded as fossils — a greeting from those that lived millions of years ago.

Diabase

Dark or grey-speckled diabase rises up through the earth's crust as magma and fills the cracks in older rock. Diabase contains large amounts of iron and is therefore hard and very heavy — a cubic metre weighs about three tonnes. Our ancestors used diabase to make capable tools.

Gneiss

Its pinkish-red colour makes gneiss closely resemble granite, but on closer inspection the distinct bands and veins in parallel layers reveal that it is gneiss. Once the stone has been shaped into small beads, telling them apart becomes quite tricky.
