A beautiful dragonfly (TROLLSLÄNDA) in silver.

For us, it is most associated with lazy summer days on an air mattress, where they buzz around in the reeds, or as a colourful touch in late-summer gardens by the water. In any case, it is a common sight in our inner archipelago.

There are several explanations for where the Swedish name trollslända comes from. According to the Swedish Dragonfly Society, the most likely is that “-slända” comes from the spindle (slända) used when spinning yarn — its shape is quite like a dragonfly’s body.

The “troll” part of the name goes far back; the first Swedish written source may date from the 1600s. Dragonflies were then linked to witches (trollpackor) — they were, in other words, the witches’ creatures: dragonflies.
